Origin of Diversity

DNA is passed down from parents to offspring by the mechanism of exact reproduction (transmission). Though rare, different DNA may be created (mutation). When mutation occurs, an offspring with appearance and traits different from their parents may be born. Furthermore, due to the involvement of organisms themselves and the environment, the change in appearance traits may be accelerated (natural selection) or new species created (speciation). The greatly diversified organisms we see today keep evolving in this way.
