Evolution of Elephants

At the beginning of Cenozoic Era, mammalsexpanded their living areas and were required to adapt to various environments. The group that led to present day elephants was one of those which passed through a unique evolution by adapting themselves to eating plants. Members of proto-elephants appeared approximately 60 million years ago. Currently they possess the largest body size among all animals living on land.
