Ripple Marks / Dolomite

Ripple Marks / Dolomite

Ripple marks are ripple-like patterns created at the sea bottom that maintain this form in the stratum. The exhibited specimen is an ancient one found in the Himalayan mountain range of Nepal. It shows that the stratum was once located at the sea bottom.

Dolomite shown to the left is a limestone containing a large amount of magnesium. It also contains stromatolite formed in shallow seas. Both strata were sedimented in shallow seas in the northern part of the Indian continent. After the collision with the Eurasian continent, the strata rose and formed the Himalayan mountain range known as the roof of the world.
