Squamata

Squamata

This group is related to the pangolin, and their bodies are covered with hard "scales," which are layered like roof tiles. These "scales" were transformed from thick skin, so when they are attacked by an enemy, they defend themselves by rolling their bodies into a ball. They slurp up ants and termites with their long, narrow tongues, which are coated with sticky saliva. Since they swallow their prey whole, they have no teeth or muscles for chewing. The relatives of the pangolin live in Asia and Africa.
